Psychiatry & psychology

Getting started

What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication and manage the biological side of a mental health condition. A clinical psychologist doesn't prescribe medication. They provide psychological interventions through evidence-based therapy. We offer both, and our team can help you figure out which fits your situation.
How do I know if I need to see a psychiatrist or a psychologist?
You don't have to know in advance. If you're unsure, our team can help guide you during your first visit, and many people benefit from a combination of both.
What conditions do you treat?
We see a wide range of concerns: anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder, and more. See our Conditions We Treat page for a fuller picture, and reach out if you don't see your specific situation listed.
What should I expect during my first session?
Your first session involves an assessment of your concerns, a conversation about your personal history, and understanding your current symptoms. You'll also get a chance to talk about what you're hoping to get out of treatment.
How long does treatment usually take?
It varies based on your specific concerns, your goals, and how you respond to care. Some people benefit from short-term support; others need longer-term treatment through medication, therapy, or a combination of both. Your care team reviews progress with you regularly and adjusts the plan as needed.
Therapy & counselling

What therapy is like here

What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a collaborative process where you work with a trained mental health professional to explore and understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It can help with managing stress, improving relationships, navigating life's challenges, and supporting your overall wellbeing.
Who provides therapy at Synapse?
Therapy is provided by a licensed clinical psychologist as part of our team.
What kinds of therapy do you offer?
We offer evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), chosen based on what you're navigating rather than a one-size-fits-all program.
Can therapy help with everyday stress, or is it only for serious mental health issues?
Therapy can help with a wide range of things, including everyday stress, relationship problems, work challenges, anxiety, depression, and trauma. You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from it.
Is therapy effective without medication?
Yes. Many people benefit from therapy alone. In some cases, combining therapy with medication may offer better outcomes. Your care team will discuss what makes sense for you.
Is everything I share in therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is confidential, in line with India's Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, except in situations involving risk of harm to yourself or others, or as required by law. Your therapist will walk you through confidentiality in detail during your first session.
